I grew up in beauty.
So I know what beauty can give a woman. I also know what happens when we make money for years without a plan for what that money is supposed to become.
My first business lesson came from my mom.
My grandmother was born on a plantation, into a family of sharecroppers. She got very little schooling.
One generation later, my mother became a hairstylist. Then she opened Hollywood.
That salon changed our family. I watched my mom use what she could do with her hands to raise three girls and create a life that looked different from the one she came from.
But I saw the other side too. Decades behind the chair. Two hip replacements. Months she couldn't work. And after all those years of making money, no real retirement plan waiting for her.
Nobody taught her to build for the day her hands couldn't do what they had always done.
Today, my mom works for me. The business she built changed my life. And everything I've built since has changed hers too.
Income matters. What you build with it matters more.
Before lashes, I learned how to sell.
I worked in tech sales in corporate America. That's where I learned how people buy, how to communicate value and how to ask for the money.
Then one Sunday night, I went to church and felt God tell me it was time to go.
Monday morning, I quit. No business plan. No five-year strategy. Just a calling I couldn't ignore.
And what did I leave corporate America to do?Sell shapewear with my mama.Body By Hollywood. Flea markets. Street festivals. A kiosk in the mall.
Before I ever built Lash Millionaire, I learned business table by table.
I didn't even want to do lashes.
I grew up in salons. I had absolutely no desire to spend my adult life in one.
When my mom suggested lashes, I told her:"I don't want to sit behind somebody's head for two hours."She said, "No. I think you'd be good."
Then she paid for my class.
The woman whose beauty business raised me pushed me into the beauty business I was trying not to enter. And she was right.
Lashes weren't the dream. They were the door.
And then lashes kept getting bigger.
That's where I started. Not a luxury salon. Not a product company. A closet.
The girl who never wanted to work in a salon ended up running her mother's.
Artists started asking how I did it. I started teaching my One-Hand Volume™ technique, and eventually trained hundreds of artists across the U.S. and internationally.
I launched my product line while pregnant with my son. Money started meaning something different.
I opened my first big salon on my own.
I stopped teaching only technique and started teaching artists how to turn the skill into a real business.
I bought a commercial building, and I was my own realtor on the deal.
A grandmother born on a plantation.
A mother with her own salon.
A daughter who owns the building.
My lash business became my business partner. Not my job.
I stopped seeing success as taking more appointments forever. The business could pay me, create opportunities and help build what came next.
Your business shouldn't only need something from you. Over time, it should create something for you too.
Then I realized this story was older than us.
The more I learned about the history of Black women in beauty, the more familiar it felt.
In the early 1900s, Annie Turnbo Malone built a beauty company and a school, and trained thousands of women to earn their own money. She later moved her business to Chicago. She's buried not far from where I live, and I never knew.
One of the women who sold her products was Madam C. J. Walker, the daughter of formerly enslaved parents, who turned beauty into business, ownership and wealth.
More than a hundred years ago, Black women were already connecting the same things:Beauty. Sales. Teaching. Ownership.Suddenly I saw my own family differently.
So when people ask why it's called Lash Millionaire, this is part of the answer.
This is bigger than buying more stuff.
Lash Millionaire started as Lash Gang. I changed the name because I wanted a bigger vision for our industry.
I like nice things too. But that's not why I want women making more money.
Money creates options. It can change where your child goes to school. Where you live. Whether you can help your mother. Whether you can rest when your body needs to. Whether you can own, invest and retire.
And sometimes, whether you can leave.
My mom made money with her hands for decades. I want us to build for the day we can't.
Build enough stability to decide what comes next, instead of letting life decide for you.
Your story doesn't have to look like mine.
You don't have to launch products. Teach. Own salons. Buy a building. Lashes don't even have to be what you do forever.
That's the point.
